LAKE CASTAIC, Calif. – Brown sophomore swimmer Cory Mayfield (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) competed at the 2014 U.S. Open Water Championships on June 13, finishing 12th overall in the 10K race with a mark of 1:53:31.698.
"Cory's strong finish in the 10K is a direct function of his relentless dedication to distance training and competition. I am very proud of his leadership," said Brown head swimming coach Peter Brown.
Mayfield was the first Brown swimmer to compete in the 10K Open Water Championships and his 12th place finish now allows him to compete in the international circuit.
I felt great out there, it was my best finish in the event and it was the strongest field the race had ever seen. I'm very happy with the result and excited to qualify for the world circuit," said Mayfield.
Mayfield holds the all-time Brown record in the 500 Freestyle with a mark of 4:24.49 set at the 2013 Ivy League Championships. He also owns the second-fastest school time of 15:28.92 in the 1650 Freestyle and third-fastest mark in the 1000 Freestyle (9:12.15), a personal best in that event. For his efforts against Providence on January 4, a day that saw him score wins in both the 200 IM and 500 Freestyle, Mayfield garnered ECAC Swimmer and Diver of the Week accolades.
