Men's Swimming and Diving Clipped by Cornell, 152-148
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown men's swimming and diving squad was edged by the Big Red of Cornell, 152-148, in a tough Ivy League battle on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Pool.
"It was a tough loss on both sides, but our men and women competed well today. We had a lot of fast swims and that is very promising as we head into the end of our season," said head coach Peter Brown.
Tommy Glenn shined for the Bears on Saturday as he shattered the previous pool record of 49.12 in the 100-Yard Butterfly, clocking in at 47.30 to place first in the event. He also struck again for two more victories on the day, scoring titles in the 100-Yard Freestyle (45.25) and the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:39.78).
Victories in the 50-Yard Freestyle by Jeffrey Strausser (20.56), 200-Yard Breaststroke by Thomas Mercurio (2:02.84), and the 500-Yard Freestyle brought the Bears close. Mercurio stormed back in his event to edge Victor Luo by .01 seconds, putting Brown in position to steal the meet.
Needing to place first and second in afternoon's final event, the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, Brown came up just short as they placed first and third, narrowly edged by a fraction of a second.
Brown will return home to the Katherine Moran Aquatics Center on Saturday to host Yale at 3 p.m.
