10th-Ranked Bears Earn Sweep Of Bowdoin, Bates and Colby
Jan. 29, 2006
The Men's Squash Team pulled out two wins on Saturday afternoon at Brunswick, Maine, with 8 - 1 wins over Colby and Bowdoin, and then followed those wins with a battling and thrilling 5-4 win against Bates at their new squash facility in Lewiston ME on Sunday.
The Bates match saw the #10 ranked Bears taking on #12 Bates at Lewiston and what a match it turned out to be. It took an agonizing 80 minute match at #4 with Tri-Captain David Krupnick '06, who saved a total of 5 match balls in games 4 and 5 before finally closing out the match 10-8 in the fifth in front of a loud, boisterous and large crowd.
Having won at #9 with Mark Goldberg '07, who came from 1-2 down to win in 5 (9-0 in the fifth), and at #3 with Edward Cerullo '08, and #2 with Dan Petrie 07, Brown was looking comfortable with four matches in the bag.
Tri-Captain Brian Rifkin '06 playing at #5 had two match balls at 9-9 in the fifth to seal the match -but it did not happen! The Bears needed one more point to win the match and with all three matches remaining at 0-2 down, the prospects looked bleak - until Krupnick's heroics saved the day by the narrowest of margins . Next up for the Bears MIT and Tufts away on Thursday 2 February.
