Feb. 23, 2009

Princeton, New Jersey - Brown completed a successful Hoehn Cup competition by finishing 13th in the country following a 6-3 victory over Navy Sunday night at the College Squash Association National Championship. The Bears opened the Hoehn Cup with a 6-3 loss to Franklin & Marshall, but earned a spot in the 13-14 match with a thrilling 5-4 win over St. Lawrence on Saturday.

The weekend's successes were achieved with the team carrying injuries and three players weighed down with a strong stomach virus throughout the weekend. They spent a good deal of the weekend under the weather, but competed nevertheless with great spirit in their matches.

The St. Lawrence match on Friday concluded very late at 11:10 p.m. with another marathon five game match at #1, Adrian Leanza. Leanza succumbed 9-7 in the fifth after showing his usual athleticism to thrill the crowd who stayed so late to watch a classic college squash match. Earlier in the evening Pat Davis and Evan Besser had played great five game matches to put the Bears on the road to an exciting victory.

The Bears left their best match of the season on Sunday evening to the last. It wasn't easy against the Midshipmen with three of Brown's six victories going to five games. Setting the tone for the Bears was Senior co-captain Jacob Winkler who came through at number nine early on with a solid 9-6, 10-8, 9-1 victory. Playing at number two, sophomore Ben Clayman was down two games to one before rallying for a magnificent 3-9, 9-5, 5-9, 9-7, 9-2 victory.

But it was at number six and five where the Bears gained their impetus for the match. Sophomore Evan Besser trailed 2-0, losing 1-9, 5-9, before rallying to capture the final three games, 10-9, 10-8, 9-1. Indeed Besser was 8-1 down and 2-1 down in games and the match looked over before his gritty fight back. Besser saved 7 match balls in the third and fourth games.

Junior Patrick Davis followed up at number five with a five game marathon winning, 9-4, 7-9, 9-3, 4-9, 9-4 and he too saved his best match of the season to the last.

Most impressively the match fell on the shoulders of two freshman to win the fifth and winning match to secure victory. In a nail-biting conclusion to the season Brad Thompson to a 9-4, 9-7, 9-7 victory at number four, and Tucker Bryan also won 3-0, 9-2, 9-2, 9-6. Both showed calm nerves and played with a maturity well beyond their years to secure the win for the Bears over the very capable Midshipmen squad..
