Two members of the 11th ranked Brown men's soccer team earned Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week honors after leading the Bears to a 1-0 shutout victory over Penn on Saturday, Nov. 1. Junior goalkeeper Chris Gomez (Bellflower, CA) was named the Ivy League Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Brian Joyce (Silver Spring, MD) earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Gomez stopped all eight of the Quakers shots, picking up his sixth shutout of the season and 12th of his career. In Brown's five Ivy League contests, he has allowed just one goal, blanking four of the opposition, including the last three in a row. For the season, Gomez has 65 saves, an .855 save percentage, a 0.70 goals against average and a 9-3 record.
Joyce scored the winning goal to lift Brown to the 1-0 victory on Saturday. The goal was the first of his career. The freshman took a pass from sophomore Brian Perry (Manlius, NY) and booted in a low shot from 25 yards out late in the opening half. Joyce earned a starting role early in the season and is Brown's leading rookie scorer with a goal and three assists for five points.
Brown can capture the Ivy League Title this Saturday with a win against Yale in New Haven. The road has been friendly to Head Coach Mike Noonan's team as it sports a 3-0 away record. The Bears stand atop the Ivy standings with a perfect 5-0 league mark and 9-3-1 overall record. Yale holds the second place spot with a 4-1 Ivy record.
