Gomez and Manuel Sweep Ivy League Weekly Honors

Sept. 27, 2004

The Brown men's soccer team swept this week's Ivy League honors with senior goalkeeper Chris Gomez receiving Player of the Week and freshman defender Laurent Manuel earning Rookie of the Week honors. The two led Brown to a pair of 0-0 double overtime shutouts over the #4 and #5 teams in the country over the weekend at the Stanford Nike Tournament.

Gomez made a season-high seven saves against fourth ranked Cal on Friday, including three in the second overtime. He stopped a two-man breakaway, than made an impressive reflex save on a deflected shot. Gomez denied #5 Stanford's three shots on goal on Sunday, giving him his third shutout this season. Both Cal and Stanford came into this weekend's tournament with perfect 6-0-0 records.

Manuel started both games for Brown this weekend in the backfield. The Brown defense allowed a combined ten shots on goal when Stanford and Cal average a combined 26 shots a game. Manuel has played in all seven games this season, starting five of them.

Brown will play its third straight ranked opponent on Wednesday night, facing #24 Rhode Island in Kingston, RI. The game, slated to begin at 7 p.m., will be televised live by Cox 3.
