Bernstein's Goal Lifts Brown Soccer to 1-0 Victory over Rhody
Sept. 20, 2008
Providence, RI - Senior defender Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) scored in the 49th minute of play to help lead the Brown men's soccer team (3-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over in-state rival the University of Rhode Island (3-3-0) at Stevenson Field on Saturday night.
The visiting Rams seemed to control most of the first half, out shooting the Bears 11-3. The hard-nosed defense of Bernstein, sophomore David Walls (West Yorkshire, England), senior co-captain Stephen Sawyer (Coppell, TX) and sophomore Ian Smith (Arlington, TX) shut down the Rhody offense, sending the game into halftime scoreless.
The Bears rallied in the second half, out shooting Rhode Island 9-5. Brown maintained control of the ball throughout the half, and at the 49:54 minute mark Bruno finally got on the scoreboard. Senior Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) made his 2008 season debut this evening, and was able to tally an assist. His notorious flip-throw ended in the middle of the box as Bernstein jumped up and got a head on it and put it past goalkeeper Chris Pennock (3-3-0). Bernstein earned his first goal of the season, and lead the team in shots with four.
Senior Jarrett Leech (Manakin-Sabot, VA) earned his fourth consecutive shutout with the win tonight, and picked up a save. Brown is back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Boston College, and then is at North Carolina-Greensboro on Saturday, Sept. 27.
