Men's Soccer Kicks-Off 2003 Season Tonight At adidas-Brown Classic

Providence, RI - The Brown men's soccer team will welcome 2002 NCAA College Cup Finalist Stanford along with Wisconsin-Madison and Yale to Stevenson Field for the sixth annual adidas-Brown Soccer Classic presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island tonight. The tournament will continue on Sunday.

Yale will face Wisconsin-Madison in the first game of the tournament beginning at 5 p.m. Brown will then kick-off its season against sixth ranked Stanford at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 14 with the Bulldogs and the Cardinal will face off at 11 a.m. and the Bears and the Badgers will battle it out at 1:35 p.m. The Brown-Wisconsin game will be televised live on Cox 3.

Stanford, which holds a 1-1 record coming into tonight's game, advanced to the NCAA College Cup Final with a 2-1 victory over Creighton, falling to UCLA in the title game 1-0. The Cardinal finished the season with an 18-5-2 record including 13 shutouts. Stanford has advanced to the NCAA Final Four three times.

Wisconsin-Madison finished the year 9-10-0 and return nine veterans and 13 newcomers to the team this season. They are currently 2-3 on the year this season. Yale closed out the 2002 campaign 9-6-1 and returns all but one starter this season. Tonight's game will be the BUlldogs season-opener.

Brown returns several key veterans and a list of talented newcomers this season after a 2002 season, which was plagued by injuries and close decisions. The Bears finished the year 5-8-4 with five losses coming by just one goal. The winners of six of the last nine Ivy League titles, Brown is the most successful program in Ivy soccer history with 16 Ivy titles overall.

Adom Crew '04 returns to the Bears line-up this fall after missing the final nine games of the season last year due to injury. At the time of his injury, Crew ranked fourth in the nation with ten goals and fifth in the nation in scoring with 22 points.

Brown will admit any Rhode Island Youth Soccer Association (RIYSA) player who is wearing an official RIYSA game shirt free to any one of the games to give them the opportunity to see top-level college soccer. The adidas-Brown Classic is also presented by the Courtyard Marriott, Paragon, and Sovereign Bank.
