#18 Bears Move One Step Closer In Quest For Ivy Title with 2-0 Shutout Over Penn
Oct. 29, 2005
Providence, RI - With two games left to play this season, the 18th ranked Brown men's soccer team inched its way closer to the Ivy League Title with a 2-0 shutout over Penn at a rainy and cold Stevenson Field Saturday night. The Bears remain undefeated in League play with a 5-0 mark while Dartmouth remains in second place with a 4-1 record. Juniors Andrew Daniels and Brian Joyce scored in tonight's win, which extends the team's unbeaten streak to eight games. Freshman Jarrett Leech continued his rock solid play in net, recording his fifth shutout in seven games with seven saves tonight.
Brown took the lead 25:38 into the first half and never looked back as it tacked on an insurance goal in the second, en route to its tenth victory of the season. Daniels scored the game-winner off a rebound he collected when Penn's keeper squandered a hard shot by freshman Scott Geppert from the far corner. Keith Caldwell, who sent in the lead pass to Geppert, earned an assist on the goal as well.
Joyce sailed a direct kick from 25 yards out into the top of the net midway through the second half to give the Bears some breathing room Penn created more scoring opportunities for itself in the second half after a shoddy first half performance against the top defense unit in the Ivy League. Brown's defense has allowed just two goals total in five Ivy games this season. A confident and aggressive Leech stepped up to the challenge however, making six second half saves to preserve the shutout.
Brown will play at Yale next Saturday, looking to gain further ground on the rest of the League. A win for the Bears would secure at least a share of the Ivy League Title as the showdown with Dartmouth on Nov. 12 could determine the Ivy Champion and NCAA automatic bid.
