Oneonta, NY - The Brown men's soccer team (8-4-1, 2-1-0, Ivy) ended its non-conference schedule with a 1-0 loss to Hartwick College (5-4-5) at Elmore Field on Tuesday night.
The Hawks scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute of play after John Paul Boyle received a pass from Michael Cunningham to go on a breakaway. Brown goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) came out of the net on the play, as Boyle knocked one in past his left side for an early 1-0 lead over the Bears. Both teams headed into the locker room at half even in shots, 3-3, but Bruno had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears increased their intensity in the second half, and had some great looks on goal. Freshman Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) nailed a low shot from over 30 yards out that deflected off the far post to be rebounded into play. Sophomore defender David Walls (West Yorkshire, England) picked up the loose ball and sent it high. Senior Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS) also had a great opportunity with just under a minute left in the game. Sheehan drilled a shot from the left side just outside the 18-yard box, but reserve goalkeeper Joe Gibson earned his first save of the season. Sheehan followed it up with another shot with 10 seconds left, but the shot went wide as the game ended in a Hartwick victory.
The Bears finished the game with a 10-6 advantage in shots, and Grandstrand tallied one save in net and dropped to 2-3-1 on the season. The Bears are back in action this Saturday on Stevenson Field at 7:00 p.m. against the Cornell Big Red.
