Bears Top Princeton, 2-0, To Remain Undefeated in Ivy Play
Oct. 7, 2005
Providence, RI - The Brown men's soccer team earned its fourth straight victory of the season, shutting out Princeton, 2-0, on Friday night at Stevenson Field. The shutout marked Brown's fifth of the season and freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Leech's third. Junior Ian Premo scored the game-winner for Brown off a rebound from freshman Scott Geppert in the first half. Freshman Rhett Bernstein added an insurance goal in the second half to secure the victory, the team's seventh of the season as it has now won six of its last seven contests.
The Bears got off to a sluggish start as the wet conditions didn't help matters. Neither team was able to put together any quality scoring chances with play going back and forth. With 17:43 left to play in the half, freshman Scott Geppert stole the ball back in the Brown zone and went into the box incontested. Princeton keeper Bobby Guelich made a great save but was unable to hang onto the ball, leaving Premo with a wide open shot from the near post. A Princeton defender made a diving attempt at Premo's low shot but the ball drove right past him and into the back of the net to give Brown a key 1-0 lead. The stout Brown defense held the Tigers out of their zone down the stretch, not allowing a shot on goal the entire half.
The second half was a different story as the Bears were off and rolling, eventually adding an insurance goal at the 73:55 mark. Junior Brian Joyce served in an indirect kick from the far corner along the end line. Bernstein then blasted a header into the back of the net from the far post for his first collegiate goal.
Through 232:46 minutes of play, Leech has yet to allow a goal, posting three saves in tonight's start.
Brown continues its home stand on Tuesday night when it faces cross-town rival Providence College at 7 p.m.
