PROVIDENCE, RI -- The Brown men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to the Rhode Island Rams in an intrastate showdown on Wednesday night at Stevenson Field.

Senior Gareth Elliot provided the heroics for URI (5-1-1) when he scored nine minutes into the first overtime period to snap a 1-1 tie that gave the Rams a 2-1 victory.

URI got on the board first at 10:57 of the first half when junior Peter Benevides scored on a rebound resulting from a corner kick. The Rams dominated play in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Bears came out firing in the second half, putting several rushes together and earning 11 corner kicks. Sophomore Adom Crew (Columbia, MD) notched the equalizer for Brown (2-5-0) with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest. The goal, Crew's third of the season, was assisted by junior Edu (North Brunswick, NJ) and freshman Jeff Larentowicz (West Chester, PA).

Starting in goal for the Bears was senior Peter Mahoney (Wellesley, MA) who made six saves in the game. However, Mahoney was forced to leave the game with an injury just 15 seconds after Crew's game tying goal. Freshman Chris Gomez (Bellflower, CA) replaced Mahoney in net and made one save.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 6 when they will play at Columbia in their Ivy League opener at 11:00 a.m.
