Greensboro, NC - Sophomore Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) knocked in two goals and senior Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) scored once to help the Brown men's soccer team (5-2-1) to a 3-0 defeat over UNC Greensboro (3-5-1) on Saturday night.
Brown's first goal came in the 16th minute of play when senior Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) placed a free kick into the box. Bernstein was able to get his head on the ball and knock it to the bottom right of the goal past the Spartan's goalkeeper, Chad Dickerson, and head into the half with a 1-0 lead.
Bruno kept the offensive pressure up in the second half, as Okafor tallied two goals to earn the win. Okafor's first goal came just two minutes after the half, when Howerton crossed the ball into the middle of the box and Okafor drilled one in from the right post.
Okafor scored his second goal at the 59:03 mark when he received a through ball by junior TJ Thompson (Atkinson, NH). Okafor made a move by UNC Greensboro's keeper, and drilled one into the back of the net to put the score at 3-0 and to eventually win the game.
Senior Jarrett Leech (Manakin-Sabot, VA) posted six saves in net, and earned the victory to increase his record to 4-0-1 on the season. UNCG out shot the Bears 16-11, including 14-6 in the second half. The Spartans also had a7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't crack the stingy Bear defense that recorded its sixth shutout of the season.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when it hosts the Columbia Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Stevenson Field.
