Bears Extend Unbeaten Streak To Five With 2nd Straight 0-0 Tie To A Top Five Opponent
Sept. 26, 2004
Stanford, CA - For the second straight game the Brown men's soccer team shutout a top five ranked opponent with a 0-0 double overtime battle to #5 Stanford on Sunday in the final round of the Stanford Nike Tournament. The tie extends the Bears unbeaten streak to five as they have not lost since Sept. 10, when they fell 1-0 to Clemson. In the first day of action at the Stanford Tourney, Brown drew a 0-0 double overtime tie to #4 Cal. Both Cal and Stanford had perfect records of 6-0-0 going into this weekend's tournament.
Brown out-shot the Cardinal 9-6 and also held an advantage on corner kicks, 6-4. Senior co-captain Chris Gomez picked up his third shutout of the season, denying all three of Stanford's shots on goal.
Senior co-captain Jeff Larentowicz and junior leading scorer Keith Caldwell led Brown with three shots a piece, including two on goal. Brown's defense, anchored by Larentowicz, has allowed just five goals in the last six games.
Cal won the Tournament with a 1-0 victory over previously undefeated #3 Santa Clara on Sunday night. No All-Tournament Team was selected.
Up next for Brown will be its third straight ranked opponent, #24 University of Rhode Island, on Wednesday night in Kington, RI. The game, slated to begin at 7 p.m., will be televised live by Cox 3 in Rhode Island.
