Brown Men's Soccer Ties UC Irvine, 2-2

Sept. 23, 2007

San Diego, CA - Two goals scored by senior forward Kevin Davies (Port Washington, NY) helped #9 ranked Brown (6-0-1) to a 2-2 double overtime tie against #21 UC Irvine (5-1-1) this afternoon at the Adidas San Diego Classic at Torero Stadium.

Although both teams were held scoreless in the first half, Brown was able to get off four shot attempts as UC Irvine recorded zero. Freshman Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) started the offense for Brown and took the first shot of the game at the 10:58 mark but was stopped by the Anteaters goalkeeper Pat Barton. Both Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) and Chris Roland (Rochester, NY ) took shots that went wide, and sophomore Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA) fired one at the 43:07 mark, but was saved by Barton.

Brown tallied the first goal at the 56:28 mark when Davies put one through the net from Elenz-Martin. Just eight minutes later, Davies did it again after he received a header from junior Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS) and tapped one in past the goalie to put Bruno ahead of the Anteaters, 2-0. The goals by Davies today were his fourth of the weekend and sixth overall.

UC Irvine finally recorded its first shot of the game at the 62 minute mark, but was saved by freshman goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, ME). The Anteaters kept up the offensive attack and finally scored at 69:28 by a penalty kick taken by Matt Murphy. Murphy tied the game up at 2-2 in the 84th minute of play after finding the back of the net on another penalty kick forcing the game into overtime.

UC Irvine tallied the only shot in both of the overtimes, and fortunately couldn't crack the Bears' defense. Brown will be back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 2 when they host Boston University. They open Ivy League play at home on Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. and will also challenge Boston College at 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Stevenson Field.
