Bears Defeat San Diego, 3-2, in Adidas San Diego Classic

San Diego, CA - Senior Kevin Davies (Port Washington, NY) scores two goals and junior Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS) scores one during the Brown men's soccer team's 3-2 victory over San Diego (3-3-0) during the opening night of the Adidas San Diego Classic on Friday evening.

Although the Bears (6-0-0) only recorded three shots on goal in the first half, two found the back of the net to give Brown a 2-1 lead heading into half-time. Brown's first attempt was a header by Sheehan, but went left of the goal. The next opportunity came at the 32:19 mark when Davies headed in a free kick taken by Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) over the Toreros' goalkeeper Kelin Briones.

Just three minutes later, USD tied the game 1-1 when Tannen Wels took a penalty kick from the middle that found the low right corner of the goal past Brown's Jarrett Leech (3-0-0). But the Bears' offense got fired up, as Davies blasted in another shot one minute later from the top of the box. Davies dribbled it up the field, passed it off to sophomore Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA), who dished it right back to Davies who kicked one into the left corner of the net at the 36:12 mark.

The Toreros came out firing after the half, taking four quick shots that were all stopped by Leech. Brown kept the intensity up when Sheehan collected the game-winning goal off a Davies assist at the 63:36 mark increasing Brown's lead to 3-1. USD took three more shots that were saved by Leech, but Fabrice Gautrat was able to convert a penalty kick at 80:36 to put the score at 3-2. Gautrat tried to get another one in with 10 seconds left, but Leech made the save to end the game at 3-2.

USD out shot Brown 10-4 for the game, and Leech tallied five saves for the night. Toreros goalkeeper Kelin Briones picked up two saves.

Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 23 when they take on #20 UC Irvine at 3:00 p.m. ET.
