Brown wins battle over visiting Hawks
Sept. 19, 2006
Providence, RI - With just 1:37 left remaining in regulation, Brown University sophomore defender Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) tapped in the game-winning goal over visiting Hartwick College (3-5-1) to put the Bears (5-1-0) up 2-1 to eventually win the game.
With the rain pouring down and both teams battling back and forth, Bears midfielder Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) booted the ball to junior Kevin Davies (Port Washington, NY) who then got the ball to Bernstein. Bernstein, who was standing in front of the goal, tapped the ball in past Hartwick's goalkeeper.
Despite Hartwick taking a 1-0 lead in the first half with the time at 36:20, the Bears refused to lose. At 57:51, senior midfielder Brian Joyce (Silver Spring, MD) passed the ball to Bernstein who headed the ball into the goal to tie the game. Bernstein's two goals against Hartwick put him on top for his team, as he brought in his fourth goal of the season.
Although both teams recorded just four fouls each heading into half time, the teams picked up the intensity. Hartwick recorded 13 fouls in the second period while also receiving a yellow card, as Brown racked up eight.
Brown was led in the goal by sophomore Jarrett Leech (Manakin-Sabo, VA) who recorded six saves. Both teams took 15 shots on goal.
The Bears are back in action at 3 p.m. at Dartmouth on Saturday in their 2006 Ivy League opener. Last year, Brown, Dartmouth and Yale tied for the 2005 Ivy title.
