Walls' Goal Lifts Bears to 1-0 Victory over Furman
Sept. 12, 2008
Providence, RI - Sophomore David Walls (West Yorkshire, England) scored in the 65th minute of play to lead the #12 Brown men's soccer team (2-1-0) to a 1-0 victory over Furman (1-3-0) during the Aaron Olitsky Memorial/Nike Soccer Classic hosted by the College of Charleston on Friday night.
After a scoreless first half which saw just two shots for Brown, the Bears played a much improved second half on both ends of the field. In his first collegiate game, Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) sparked the attack and created many opportunities for the offense, while the back line of freshman Ian Smith (Arlington, TX), Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA), Walls and Stephen Sawyer (Coppell, TX) stymied the Paladin offense.
The game-winning goal was scored after a Brown corner kick in the 65th minute of play, Furman's defense tried desperately to clear the ball from the penalty box but were unsuccessful. Walls was able to regain control of the ball for the Bears and fired it at the goal. Furman's goalkeeper Josh Zimmer made a valiant effort to make the save, but his deflection wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the goal.
Senior Jarrett Leech (Manakin Sabot, VA) was in goal for the Bears, and tallied four saves, two of which came in the second half to help Brown keep the lead. The win increased his record to 2-0 on the season. Walls posted four of Brown's six shots during, but the Paladin's held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
The men's soccer team is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 14, when they take on the College of Charleston at 2:30 p.m.
