Sept. 12, 2003
Providence, RI - The Brown men's soccer team kicked off the 2003 season with a huge 2-1 win over 19th ranked Stanford University Friday, Sept. 12 at the sixth annual adidas-Brown Classic. Brown scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half in front of a sell-out crowd at Stevenson Field. The Cardinal, who advanced to the NCAA College Cup Final just one year ago, are now 1-2 this season
Brown opened the game quickly, controlling the tempo through much of the first half. The Bears out-shot the Cardinal 9-5 in the half as junior Jeff Larentowicz (West Chester, PA) along with the rest of the Brown backfield, made huge defensive plays.
Stanford got on the board first early in the second half when it scored off a corner kick. The Bears quickly responded less than nine minutes later to tie the game 1-1.
Brown recorded the game-winning goal at the 69:16 mark when freshman Matt Britner (Halifax, Nova Scotia) headed in a corner kick taken by Romaneiro. The goal was Britner's first collegiate score and Romaneiro's third point of the night.
Senior Edward Thurston (Washington, DC) came up big for Brown as he helped keep Stanford out of its zone the rest of the way. Junior goalkeeper Chris Gomez (Bellflower, CA) ended the game with four saves, including a key stop off a Stanford breakaway with less than a minute left to play
Brown continues action on Sunday versus Wisconsin-Madison at 1:30 p.m. in the final day of the adidas-Brown Classic. The game will be televised live on Cox 3 in Rhode Island. Yale will face Stanford prior to the game at 11:00 a.m.
