Dallas, TX - The No. 17 Brown men's soccer team (3-1-0) suffered its first loss of the year Saturday night, falling to the No. 3 SMU Mustangs (6-0-0) by a 5-1 count. With the win, the host Mustangs won the title of the SMU Mi Cocina Classic.
SMU scored its first goal in the ninth minute off of a penalty kick when a player was taken down inside the box. Sophomore back Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) knotted things up just over a minute later, heading in a free kick by sophomore midfielder Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA).
But things got worse from there for Brown, as the relentless SMU attack proved too strong. The Mustangs reeled off three more goals before the half, including another goal off a penalty kick, and added another just one minute after the intermission to seal the deal. For the game, SMU ran up a 16-7 shot advantage.
The Bears' next contest will be on Thursday, when they travel up to Boston for a 7 p.m. kickoff with Boston University.
