Providence, RI - In the final day of the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic presented by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, the Brown men's soccer team defeated the Fordham Rams, 3-1, and clinched the tournament title. Juniors Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS), and Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) picked up a goal, as well as senior Kevin Davies (Port Washington, NY). Sheehan was named the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic's Offensive MVP, while junior Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA) was named the Defensive MVP. Howerton, Davies, sophomore Christopher Roland (Rochester, NY) and freshman David Walls (Yorkshire, UK) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Sheehan put Brown on the scoreboard first with a nice shot from the left side past a diving Fordham goalkeeper, Dan Hajducky. Sheehan's goal was his second of the weekend, as he ended the tournament with two goals and one assist.
Just six minutes later, Bruno was able to notch another goal when Howerton collected a pass from sophomore Iain Eldredge (Cumberland, ME) and blasted a shot from outside the box into the right corner of the goal at the 31:23 mark.
But just one minute into the second half, Fordham's Chris Paolino was able to sneak in a quick goal past Brown junior goalkeeper Jarrett Leech (Manakin-Sabo, VA) to put the score at 2-1. However, the Bears' stellar defense of Bernstein, senior Matt Britner (Halifax, NS) and junior Stephen Sawyer (Coppell, TX) silenced Fordham's offensive attack for the rest of the game.
Bruno kept the offense rolling at the 68:52 mark when freshman Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) set-up Davies on the left side for a goal. The goal was Davies' second of the weekend.
Brown's Leech picked up the win in goal (1-0) and tallied three saves. Fordham's Hajducky had one.
Up next, Brown (2-0) will challenge the University of Maine at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13 and then the University of Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 16.
