Providence, RI - The Brown Men's Soccer team rallied in the second half as junior Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS) and senior Kevin Davies (Port Washington, NY) each chipped in a goal to help the Bears defeat No. 5 ranked Santa Clara, 2-1, during the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic on Friday night.
The Bears starting 11 was made up of a mixture of veterans and underclassmen, as two seniors, four juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen took the field to open the season in game two of the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic. In their Brown debuts, rookie goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) tallied six saves and midfielder David Walls (West Yorkshire, UK) picked up an assist.
The Broncos opened the scoring after 14:34 minutes of play when forward Brian Martin crossed the ball from the right side to teammate Jide Ogunbiyi. Ogunbiyi got himself in position and made a diving header past Brown's Grandstrand to give Santa Clara a 1-0 lead for the rest of the half.
However, the Bears came out fired-up after halftime, as they went on to score their first goal just four minutes into play. Walls was able to set up a perfect pass to Sheehan, as he crossed the ball from the right side to be met by Sheehan's head to tie-up the game, 1-1.
Although the Broncos were able to outshoot the Bears 12-4 in the second half, Bruno took the lead for good after a great shot by Davies. Davies collected a pass from Sheehan and launched one from outside the box and past Bronco's goalkeeper, Joseph Buttitta. The time of the goal was 53:30.
The adidas-Brown Soccer Classic presented by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Bears will take on Fordham (who lost to Boston University 4-0 tonight) for a 2:30 p.m. kick-off. Boston University will take on Santa Clara prior to that at noon.
