Providence, RI - The men's soccer team (1-0-0) opened its season with a bang Friday night, downing the University of San Diego Toreros (2-1-0), 2-1, in front of a packed crowd at Stevenson Field. Junior Kevin Davies' (Port Washington, NY) game-winning goal in the 69th minute handed the Toreros their first loss of the season. Bruno showed no drop-off from last season's Ivy Championship team, impressively handling the Toreros and their speedy forwards.
With the score tied at one, Davies beat his defender and found himself one-on-one with San Diego keeper Lance Friesz. Davies' first shot was stopped by a sprawling Friesz, but the rebound came back to the Brown forward, who put the ball in the open net to give the Bears the lead for good.
Sophomore Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA), struck first for the Bears against the team from his hometown. In the 20th minute, senior Ian Premo (Florence, MA) sent a cross from the right side of the net that Bernstein headed home. The goal was the first surrendered by the Toreros this season.
San Diego's Michael Caso tied things up in the 38th minute on a play that mirrored Brown's goal. Eric Pohl took a corner kick from the left of the goal that Caso headed past Brown keeper Jarrett Leech (Manakin-Sabo, VA).
The goal was the only blemish on an otherwise great night for Leech, who had six saves. The entire Brown defense held up well, yielding just once on USD's nine corner kicks.
The Bears play again Sunday, hosting the Northeastern University Huskies at 4 p.m. on Stevenson Field.
