PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie John Vrablic (Avon, Ohio) notched the equalizer early in the second half, but the Brown men's soccer team fell at Providence College in overtime, 2-1, in Wednesday evening's non-conference match at Anderson Stadium.
Brown dropped to 6-3-1 overall, while Providence improved to 3-7-2 on the season.
Senior Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) made four saves for the Bears. Colin Miller registered two stops to pick up the win.
Matt DePerro put the Friars on the board in the 14th minute. After Cipicchio came out to challenge DePerro following a through ball just past midfield, DePerro worked his way around the keeper and hit the open net for the early advantage.
Cipicchio kept the Bears in the game with three saves during the remainder of the half, including back-to-back stops shortly before halftime, the second of which was punched over the crossbar to maintain a one-goal deficit.
Vrablic netted the equalizer for Brown early in the second half at 51:16. Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) sent a pass down the right side, where Vrablic split a pair of defenders and launched a shot from the corner of the box past Miller for his first career goal.
From there, the two teams managed one shot on goal apiece during the rest of regulation to force overtime. Joao Serrano scored the golden goal in the 96th minute, as he curved a free kick around a wall of defenders and into the net at the far post, securing the overtime victory for the Friars.
Vrablic and Lozada paced the Bears with two shots apiece.
Brown returns to Ivy League play on Saturday when the Bears visit Harvard at 7 PM.
