Howell’s Overtime Goal Sends Men’s Soccer Past Holy Cross, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute as the Brown men's soccer team rallied past Holy Cross, 2-1, in Sunday afternoon's non-conference contest at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Brown moved to 3-0 on the season, defeating Holy Cross in overtime for the second straight year, while the Crusaders dropped to 1-2-1 overall.

Senior Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) notched the other goal for the Bears late in the second half, while senior keeper Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) made three saves. Henry Stutz recorded four saves on the other end for the Crusaders.

Holy Cross jumped out to an early lead by means of an own goal by the Bears in the 12th minute. Brown held a slim lead in shots, 5-4, in the opening 45 minutes of play.

Max Krause nearly gave the visitors a two-goal lead just ten minutes into the second, but his shot in front of the net rattled off the crossbar, keeping the Bears within striking distance.

English scored the equalizer at 71:38 with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Joseph Lee (Vernon Hills, Ill.) moved the ball down the left side and then sent a cross across the field to English, who buried a shot into the bottom left corner of the net, making it 1-1.

Holy Cross had seven corner kicks in the final 18 minutes of regulation, but the Bears kept the visitors off the board to send the game into extra time. The two teams had two saves apiece in the second half.

Howell earned his first goal in a Brown uniform at 95:33. English took control of the ball near midfield and then lofted a cross in front of the net, where Howell headed home the game winner past Stutz for the victory. Senior defender Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) also earned an assist on the play.

Holy Cross won the battle for overall shots, 13-12, and corner kicks, 12-9.

Brown will hit the road for a pair of games next weekend when the Bears visit Tulsa (9/15) and SMU (9/17).
