PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomores Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) both scored in the first half and Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) stopped all six shots he faced as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Quinnipiac, 2-0, in Friday night's home opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears earned their second shutout in as many games to improve to 2-0-0 on the season. Quinnipiac fell to 1-3-0 overall.
Cipicchio picked up his second win of the season and third career shutout, while Chrys Iakovidis made four saves for the Bobcats in the loss. Brown outshot Quinnipiac, 14-13.
D'Andrea put the Bears on the board in the 21st minute with his first tally of the season. Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) started the play with a cross to the left side to Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas), who quickly tapped a pass into the box, before D'Andrea sent a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
Brown tacked on its second goal of the half at 38:22 when Schiller scored his first career goal. After Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) launched a throw-in into the box, Schiller gained control of the ball and then blasted a shot past the reach of Iakovidis for the two-goal lead at the half.
Quinnipiac came out from the locker with a big opportunity one minute into first half, when Rashawn Dally gained separation near midfield for a breakaway, but Cipicchio smothered the attempt to keep the Bobcats off the board.
Brown limited the Bobcats to just one more shot on target the rest of the way to secure the shutout victory. The Bears also held the edge in corner kicks, 6-5, overall.
The Bears return to action on Sunday when they host Holy Cross at 4 PM.
