PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Austin Lind (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored the only goal of the game with less than 15 minutes remaining as the Brown men's soccer team shutout Bryant, 1-0, in Friday afternoon's season opener at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
Brown (1-0) stepped up defensively in the first match of the season, holding Bryant to without a shot on goal, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3 overall.
Senior keeper Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) earned his second career shutout, while Nick Stewart registered four saves for the Bulldogs. Brown outshot the Bulldogs, 12-2, overall.
Neither team was able to generate much offense in a scoreless first half, featuring three combined shots, as the Bears provided the only shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
The Bears picked it up offensively midway through the second stanza, after four corner kicks within a three-minute span generated a pair of attempts from Lind and Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas), but both bids sailed wide of the net.
Lind put the Bears on the board in the 76th minute. After being denied by Stewart on the first attempt, Lind buried the rebound on his second shot for his first career goal.
The Brown backline continued to stifle the Bulldogs during the final minutes of the contest, keeping the home side to without a quality look, before the Bears denied and cleared a late cross to secure the victory.
Brown led the way in shots on goal, 4-0, and in corner kicks, 9-3.
The Bears return to action on Friday, Sept. 8 when they host Quinnipiac in the home opener at 7 PM.
