Long Scores Twice in Men’s Soccer’s Loss to No. 3 Clemson, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) scored a pair of goals early in the second half to even the score, but the Brown men's soccer team fell to No. 3 Clemson, 3-2, in Sunday afternoon's non-conference matchup at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Brown dropped to 6-6-1 overall after the team's final non-conference game of the season. Clemson improved to 9-2-3 on the season.

Ximo Miralles recorded two saves in the win for Clemson. Teo Norhagen (Stockholm, Sweden) stopped two shots in the first half, before giving way to Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) at halftime, who made one save in the second stanza.

Clemson scored a pair of goals in the first half, starting at 30:22, when Grayson Raynor volleyed a shot over the reach Norhagen for the lead. The Tigers tacked on another goal just over six minutes later, as Aaron Jones sent a free kick in front and Mauriq Hill headed home the shot, giving the visitors the two-goal advantage at the half.

Clemson outshot the Bears, 6-2, in the opening 45 minutes.

The Bears answered back early in the second half as Long notched a pair of goals within a five-minute span. Long put the Bears on the board in the 49th minute when he tipped in a one-timer following a header from Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) to trim the deficit to one, 2-1.

Brown continued to press offensively and it paid off five minutes later. Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) sent a long throw-in into the box, where Long converted a header for his third goal of the season to even the score, 2-2.

Andrew Burnikel scored the go-ahead goal for Clemson at 72:58. Michael Swift launched a cross into the box, where Burnikel gained control, and flicked a shot back into the net.

Long nearly tied the game again in the 81st minute with consecutive bids, but his first attempt was blocked and Miralles corralled the rebound to preserve the one-goal game.

Brown had one last corner kick with 20 seconds remaining, but the Tigers held the home side at bay to hold on for the win.

Clemson outshot the Bears, 11-9. Long paced the Bears with four shots, including three on target.

Brown returns to Ivy League play on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they Bears host Cornell at 1 PM.
