PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair Patrick Laughlin has announced that junior Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) has been named team captain for the upcoming 2015 season, in a vote by members of the team.
"Tim is an excellent choice to lead this team," said Laughlin. "He has been the leader of the group from the day the 2014 season ended. He has set the tone for what has been a very productive off-season. Tim has proven again and again that he is committed to getting the most out of himself and his teammates. I am looking forward to his continued leadership."
Whalen will serve as team captain for the first time in his career after another impressive junior campaign last fall. He started 16 games last season en route to Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors. Whalen anchored a backline that secured seven shutouts and ranked second in the Ivy League with a 0.98 goals against average. He finished with a career-high 12 shots, including seven on target, and also added one assist.
Whalen started all 17 games at center back as a sophomore in 2013 and helped lead the Bears' backfield to four shutouts and a team goals-against average of 1.16. Whalen was a two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week in 2012, starting 18 games as a freshman.
