Maurey’s Late Tally Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Columbia, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in regulation to lead the Brown men's soccer team past Columbia, 1-0, on Saturday night in the Ivy League opener for both teams at a rain-swept Stevenson Field.

Brown posted its fourth straight shutout and moved to 3-3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Columbia dropped to 3-4-0 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Senior keeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) made five saves in net for the Bears for his fourth shutout in as many contests and now has 420 minutes of scoreless play. Kyle Jackson made two stops for the Lions on the other end.

Brown had an early opportunity at 8:55 in the first half, when junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) fielded an impressive pass from teammate Eduardo Martin (Tenerif, Spain), but could not get his shot past Jackson as the visitors staved off the early attack. Brown outshot the Lions by a 4-2 margin in the opening 45 minutes as both teams went into the locker rooms scoreless at halftime.

Brown and Columbia continued to battle through rainy conditions in the second half, which put offensive opportunities at a premium, despite several attempts on net by the Lions down the stretch.

With less than two minute remaining in regulation and overtime looming, Maurey scored at 88:35 for his second tally of the season. Gorab sent a corner kick into the box, where senior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) corralled the ball with enough time to find space in front, before Maurey pushed it past the reach of Jackson for the game-winner.

Columbia outshot the Bears, 9-7, in the contest, while Brown won the battle for corner kicks, 4-2.

Brown returns to Ivy League play on Saturday, Oct. 11 when the Bears visit Princeton at 4 p.m.
