NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) scored a pair of goals within the opening nine minutes of the contest to lead the Brown men's soccer team past Yale, 3-1, in Ivy League play Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Brown moves to 7-6-3 on the season and 3-1-2 in conference play with its fourth-straight win, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-10-2 overall and 2-2-2 in league play.
Akeel scored his first goal at 4:51 when senior Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) sent a free kick into the box, allowing the sophomore to find space and convert on a header to give the Bears the early one-goal lead.
Brown added another goal at 8:12 as Akeel found the back of the net for the second time of the contest. Once again, the tally was set up on a free kick, as this time Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) launched a ball just outside the box, where Akeel hit a shot past the reach of Yale keeper Blake Brown to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage.
Yale trimmed the deficit to one in the 36th minute when Jenner Fox scored on a feed from Cameron Kirdzik.
Brown re-gained a two-goal in the 39th minute when senior Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, Pa.) travelled up the field and split the defense with a pass to Gorab, who buried the shot to give the Bears a 3-1 advantage.
Brown and Yale registered six shots apiece in the opening 45 minutes. Despite a 10-1 shot advantage by the Bulldogs in the second half, Brown senior keeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) turned away the only shot on-target as the Bears held on for the victory.
Weiner made two saves in goal for the Bears, while Akeel paced the team with two shots in the contest.
