PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) and freshman Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) both scored in the first half to lead the Brown men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Boston College in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field.
Brown captured its second straight win to improve to 5-6-3 overall and remain 1-1-2 in Ivy League play, while Boston College fell to 6-7-2 on the season.
Brown opened up the scoring with a goal by Salama in the 14th minute. Junior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) sent a pass from the right side to Salama in the top of the box before the senior launched a shot into the right side to give the home team the early lead, 1-0.
After senior keeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) preserved Brown's one-goal lead by turning away a free kick attempt midway through the stanza, Long found the back of the net in the 39th minute. Senior Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, Pa.) took an initial shot from the box that hit off a BC defender and rolled to open space, allowing Long to take an open look and a launch a shot to the top right of the net for the 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Weiner continued to shine for the Bears in the second half, highlighted with an impressive save at 30:58, when Isaac Normesinu blasted a shot from five yards out only to be denied by a diving stop.
Boston College added a late goal by Giuliano Frano in the final minute of the contest, but it was not enough, as the Bears held on for the victory.
Weiner made five saves in net for the Bears to earn the win, while Alex Kapp registered two stops for the Eagles. BC held a slim 12-11 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
