Men’s Soccer Draws Even with Columbia, 2-2, in Double Overtime
NEW YORK – Junior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) and sophomore Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) each found the back of the net early in the contest as the Brown men's soccer team tied Columbia, 2-2, in the Ivy League opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Columbia Soccer Stadium.
Brown moves to 3-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in Ivy action, while Columbia stands at 5-2-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in league play.
Taylor put the Bears on the board in the 13th minute with his second goal of the season. Senior Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) sent a ball in front of the Columbia net on a free kick before Taylor connected on a header to give the visitors the lead, 1-0.
Brown scored again at 25:32 when Akeel blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net and out of the reach of Columbia keeper Kyle Jackson to lift the Bears in front, 2-0. Senior Jack Kuntz (Chatham, N.J.) was also credited with an assist on the play.
Columbia battled back to even the score with a pair of goals before the end of the first stanza. Will Stamatis headed home a pass from Bryce Terrill at 28:30 to trim the deficit to one, 2-1. The Lions evened the score in the 38th minute when Andrew Tinari scored from about seven yards out on a feed from David Najem as the two teams remained tied at intermission, 2-2.
Brown outshot the Lions by a 9-5 margin in the opening 45 minutes, but the home side countered with a 5-1 edge in the second half. Nevertheless, neither team could put away the game-winner as the teams went into extra time. Salama and Taylor registered one shot apiece in successive overtimes, but it was not enough as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Senior Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) made six saves in net for the Bears, while Jackson recorded three stops on the other end for the Lions. Columbia outshot the Bears by a margin of 15-7.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 8 when they visit New Hampshire at 3:30 p.m. Brown's next home game is on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they host Princeton in the second half of a doubleheader with the women's team.
