No. 25 Brown Men’s Soccer Edged by Hofstra, 2-1, in Double Overtime
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored early in the first half, but the 25th-ranked Brown men's soccer team could not hold on as the Bears fell at Hofstra, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Brown drops to 1-2-1 on the season while Hofstra improves to 2-2-1 overall.
Brown jumped out to the early lead in the 10th minute, when Gorab capitalized on a rebounded shot to beat Hofstra keeper Roberto Pellegrini for his first goal of the season, giving the visitors the 1-0 advantage. Junior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) was credited with an assist on the play.
The first half was fairly equal on the offensive end, as Hofstra held an 8-7 shot advantage, but the Pride outshot the Bears by a 10-0 margin in the second half. The home side eventually scored the equalizer in the 66th minute when Ignacio Gorrono headed in a cross from the left side.
After a scoreless overtime period with just one shot by each team, the game headed to double overtime. Gorrono scored his second tally of the contest at 107:38 when he blasted the game-winner from about 20 yards out on the left side to secure the comeback victory.
Senior Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) made five stops in net for the Bears, while Pellegrini posted three saves on the other end. Gorab paced the Bears with three shots in the contest. Hofstra ended with a 21-8 advantage in shots.
The Bears return to action on Friday, Sept. 20 when they visit 2012 National Champion Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
