PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) scored early in the second half to even up the score as the No. 20 Brown men's soccer team and Providence College played to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in the Ocean State Soccer Classic final at Glay Field. Brown moves to 1-0-1 on the season while the Friars stand at 3-0-1 overall.
Brown and Providence were named Ocean State Soccer Classic Co-Champions following the conclusion of the tournament after each team won a first round game on Friday. Sophomore Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was named Co-MVP of the tournament, while freshman Mike Leone (Saint Clair Shores, Mich.), sophomore Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Providence was able to score in the final minute of the opening half for the 1-0 advantage. Anthony Baumann sent a corner kick into the box, where Manny Andrade controlled the feed and directed a pass to a waiting Phil Towler, who launched a shot at the left side of the net. Brown keeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) dove to his right and deflected the shot with his fist, but then seconds later it was ruled that the ball crossed the line and PC secured a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Brown evened up the score at 49:33 in the second half when Salama sent a pass from the left flank to the front of the PC goal, where Taylor was waiting and headed the ball past the reach of Keasel Broome and into the top right corner of the net.
The two teams played to a stalemate for the rest of regulation to force overtime. With sevens seconds left in the first overtime, PC was given a free kick with the clock stopped, but Markus Naglestad's shot sailed wide left to force a second overtime.
In a physical second overtime, Brown benefited from a corner kick with less than two minutes remaining, but the Bears could not come up with quality scoring opportunity as the stanza ended in a draw.
Weiner made four saves in net for the Bears while Broome stopped five shots for the Friars. PC outshot the Bears by a margin of 15-10 and won the battle for corner kicks, 6-4.
Brown returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13 when they play host to No. 19 Washington in a 7 p.m. contest at Stevenson Field.
