Seven Players Set to Join Men’s Soccer as Members of Brown’s Class of 2017

PROVIDENCE, RI - Friends of Brown Men's Soccer Head Coaching Chair Patrick Laughlin is proud to announce the addition of seven new student-athletes, set to join the Brown community in the fall of 2013. The Bears and Coach Laughlin will look to build upon their remarkable four-year run in which they have four consecutive NCAA appearances, including two trips to the Round of 16 in the past three years and an Ivy League Championship in 2011.

The class of 2017 includes one regional Olympic Developmental Program team member, and six US Soccer Development Academy players hailing from seven different states. Laughlin believes this class will represent Brown University in excellent fashion and continue the winning tradition Brown men's soccer.

Josh Butler
Virginia Beach, Virginia
High School: Frank W. Cox High School
Position: Defense/Midfield
Club Team: USSDA Virginia Rush

  • Captain of Virginia Rush U18 Team in 2012-13
  • Played up in 2011-12 on Virginia Rush U18 US Academy Team
  • U.S. Soccer Training Center participant
  • Virginia State ODP Team

Laughlin's thoughts on Butler – Josh impressed me with his performances last year for Virginia Rush in the U.S. Development Academy. He was a younger player in the team and was a vocal leader. Josh is athletic, can play in a variety of spots, and we look forward to his continued development at Brown.

Erik Hanson
Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
High School: Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School
Club Team: USSDA FC Delco (2010-2013); Philadelphia Union Academy (2011-2013)

  • Named to National Team of the Week
  • Previous member of Eastern Pennsylvania ODP Team
  • Named to the Patriot News Players to Watch list, Mid-Penn First Team, and Central Pennsylvania Big 11 Team senior year

Laughlin's thoughts on Hanson – Erik joins our goalie corps with an opportunity to push for a starting place. He is a vocal goalkeeper with a big presence. Erik impressed us with his performances last spring for FC Delco.

Mike Leone
Warren, Michigan
High School: De LaSalle Collegiate High School
Position: Defense
Club Team: USSDA Vardar SC Freiburg

  • Started in 70+ matches in USSDA
  • Vardar made USSDA Playoffs in both 2010-11 and 2011-12

  • 2011 Michigan Dream Team, All-State selection and Team Captain
  • All-State honoree in 2010
  • Set school record for most points as a first-year player in 2009

Laughlin's thoughts on Leone – Mike is another tough competitor who has come out of the Vardar Academy team. He has played and started every game for three seasons in the U.S. Academy. We feel his experience should help him in his transition to college soccer.

Tyler Long
Clarksville, Tennessee
High School: Rossview High School
Position: Forward
Club Team: Tennessee SC

  • Region III ODP team (2010-2012)
  • Three-time inter-regional ODP Participant

  • Nominated Gatorade Player of the Year for Tennessee as a junior in 2012
  • Three-time All-State and All-Conference selection

Laughlin's thoughts on Long – We first noticed Tyler playing for the Region III Team as a U15. He stood out then as one for the future. He can play as a target or underneath another forward. His off the ball movement is excellent and he has a quick release on his shot.

Jason Pesek

Laughlin thoughts on Pesek – Jason was our first player to commit to this class and filled a position of need for us. He is a left-footed defender who is a very good passer. Jason comes from two great programs in St. Louis – Scott Gallagher Club and Chaminade Prep – and has been a winner in both of them.

Nate Pomeroy
Groton, Massachusetts

  • Groton-Dunstable Regional all-time leading scorer (143 points)
  • Helped to lead Groton-Dunstable to back-to-back Massachusetts Division 2 State Championships in 2011 and 2012

Laughlin thoughts on Pomeroy – Nate is a physically gifted attacking player. He is quick on the turn, powerful and well balanced. Nate has been a goal scorer throughout his high school and academy playing experience. I expect Nate to create problems for our opponents.

Eric Sugarman

High School: Livingston High School
Position: Midfield
Club Team: USSDA NY Red Bulls (2012-13); USSDA NY Cosmos (BW Gottschee) (2011-12)

  • Liberty Conference of Super Essex Conference Champions in 2010
  • Totaled 16 goals and 32 assists in 2011
  • Conference Player of the Week to Watch in October 2011

Laughlin thoughts on Sugarman – Eric is a left-footed player who is quick and tidy on the ball. He is currently playing on NY Red Bull U18 Academy, which is a very talented group that will push him to continue his development. We think Eric can fill a gap in our team and help balance our midfield group.
