Providence, RI – The No. 21 Brown University men's soccer team will host Fairfield this evening at 7 p.m. on Stevenson Field. The Bears have won their last five straight games and enter the night 8-1-0, while Fairfield is coming off a 2-0 victory over URI last Saturday to improve to 4-4 on the year.
Senior midfielder Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NY) scored in the 70th minute on a penalty kick, and sophomore Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, CT) netted one in just six minutes later to help the Bears to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Columbia Lions in Brown's first Ivy League win last Saturday night.
McNamara leads Brown in scoring with eight points on three goals and two assists, and is followed by Voltaire Escalona's (Blue Bell, PA) six points on a goal and team-high four assists. Ten different Bears have scored this season, and Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) has helped lead the Bears to six shutouts this season.
The Bears boast an 8-3 all-time record over Fairfield, including a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Stags last season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Brown scored three goals in just over six minutes to advance in the tournament and end Fairfield's season.
Fairfield's Jordan Ayris and sophomore Michael O'Keeffe earned weekly accolades from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) on Monday. Ayris was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, while O'Keeffe picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Ayris tallied both goals in Fairfield's 2-0 win over Rhode Island, and currently leads the team in scoring with six points. O'Keeffe posted his third shutout of the year by making six saves in a 2-0 win over Rhode Island.
After tonight's contest, the Bears will head to Princeton for an Ivy League game on Saturday, Oct. 6, and will be back in Providence to host Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 13.
