Bears Capture Husky Classic Title with 3-0 Victory over Portland

Seattle, Wash. - The Brown University men's soccer team improved to 7-1-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Portland (2-4-1) to capture the Husky Classic title hosted at the University of Washington.

Senior captain Eric Robertson (San Antonio, Texas) scored first for the Bears when he blasted a shot from 18 yards out past Portland keeper Justin Baarts to tally his second goal of the season. Senior midfielder Kevin Gavey (Fairfield, CT) was awarded the assist.

The Bears outshot Portland 6-2 in the first half, and kept Baarts busy as he picked up three saves in the first 45 minutes.

Just under two minutes into the second period senior midfielder Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NY), the Husky Classic Offensive MVP, scored the Bears' second goal of the game after an assist by Tariq Akeel.

Senior forward Bobby Belair then tacked on an insurance goal when he took a pass from Voltaire Escalona, turned, and nailed a shot past Baarts.

The Bears held the Pilots to just four shots, while attempting 15 of their own. Senior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) earned two saves in his 86:07 of play, and Mitch Kupstas came in for relief playing 3:53. Kernan-Schloss improved to 7-1-0 and tallied his sixth shutout.

Brown will now host Columbia in its first game of league play at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29.
