Brown Earns Fifth Shutout with 1-0 Victory over Lehigh
Bethlehem, PA - Senior forward Bobby Belair (Myrtle Beach, SC) scored in the 28th minute to lead the Brown men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lehigh on Sunday afternoon. Brown improved to 5-1-0 to earn its fifth shutout of the year, while the Mountain Hawks dropped to 0-6-0.
The Bears got off to a slow start, as the Lehigh defense did not allow Bruno a shot in the first 10 minutes of play. Not long after, Belair blasted a shot toward the Lehigh net but Taylor Sulmonetti deflected the ball in the air and picked up his first of six saves.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) was then tested when Ben Borin nailed a shot from the left side, but Kernan-Schloss was able to grab the ball in the air and tally a save. Kernan-Schloss ended the day with two saves.
Brown finally got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when Belair tipped in a cross from junior teammate Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, PA). It was Belair's first goal of the season, and just the second of his career.
Junior Kevin Gavey (Fairfield, CT) almost made it 2-0 when he came out after the half and ripped a shot from about five yards out which was saved.
Gavey led Brown's attack with five shots (two on goal), while both Belair and Tariq Akeel had two shots each.
The Bears outshot Lehigh 14-11 for the game, but both squads were even in corner kicks (6-6) and fouls (6-6).
Brown is back in action on Sept. 21 against Washington followed by a game vs. Portland on Sept. 23 during the Husky Classic.
