Boston, MA – Freshman Tim Whalen (Amston, CT) scored just 40 seconds into overtime to help the Brown men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Boston University on Thursday night at Nickerson Field. Brown recorded its fourth shutout of the season to improve to 4-1-0 on the year, while the Terriers dropped to 1-4-2.
Whalen made the first goal of his collegiate career a big one when he headed in Brown's game-winning goal at the 90:40 mark. Senior forward Bobby Belair (Myrtle Beach, SC) headed the ball over to Whalen after Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL) blasted a midfield free kick toward the BU net. Whalen is now the fifth Bear to have scored this season as Remick now leads the team in points (3) with a goal and an assist.
There were only 14 total shots in tonight's game, as BU edged Brown 4-2 in scoring in the first 45 minutes of play. However, Bruno came out after the half to take a 5-2 advantage in shots, and had the lone shot in overtime to lead 8-6 overall. BU also had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks and an 8-7 lead in fouls.
Brown's Kevin Gavey (Fairfield, CT) led the offense with two shots on goal, while Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NY) and Whalen had one each. BU's goalkeeper Nick Thomson picked up three saves in net, while senior Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) recorded two saves.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 16 for a 1 p.m. game against Lehigh.
