Kingston, R.I. – Sophomore Tommy Arns (Barrington, IL) scored his first career goal in the 42nd minute to give Brown University a 1-0 victory over Providence College at the URI Soccer Complex. Brown, earning its first Ocean State Classic title, improved to 2-0 on the year while Providence College dropped to 1-3-0.
Senior defender Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL) was named the MVP of the tournament, while teammates Alex Markes (Valencia, CA), freshman Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, MI) and senior captain Eric Robertson (San Antonio, TX) earned All-Tournament team honors.
Rookie Jameson Lochhead (Basking Ridge, NJ) passed the ball up the field to sophomore Ben Maurey who then crossed the ball to Arns. Arns rushed in from the right side and volleyed into the back of the net past PC keeper Keasel Broome from inside the six-yard box.
Senior Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NY), Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, PA), Maurey and Arns took the only four shots of the game, as PC held a 7-4 advantage in shots. However, the Bears edged the Friars in corners, 4-1.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) finished with two saves to earn his second shutout of the young season and the 11th of his career. PC's Broome tallied one save in net to drop to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Bears will now host the Brown Soccer Classic next weekend. Brown will challenge Cleveland State at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, followed by a game against Fordham at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
