Providence, RI- The Brown University men's soccer team has added eight student-athletes for the 2012 season: Tim Whalen (Amston, CT), Jameson Lochhead (Basking Ridge, NJ), Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, CA), Will Cross (Nashville, TN), Michel Comitis (Cape Town, South Africa), Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, MI), Tyler Smith (Kingwood,TX), and Eduardo Martin (Madrid, Spain). The Brown soccer staff believes this is a special class that will contribute to the rich tradition that is Brown Men's Soccer. The returning group of seniors-to-be has set the bar of expectation high having competed in eight NCAA Tournament matches, most recently reaching the round of sixteen two years consecutively.
The accolades of the 2012 recruiting class include, but are not limited to, five academy players, five all-state first team selections, three national market training center invitees', two current captains of academy teams, two regional academy select team selections, one Top Drawer Soccer Top 100, recruit one College Soccer News Top 150 recruit, one Super-Y-League National ODP Selection, one USYSA National Champion, four state ODP team members, one current Regional ODP Team Member, and one high school all-American. The recruits hail from six different states and three different countries adding to a geographically diverse team which was ranked 17th in the Coaches' NSCAA Post-Season Poll.
"I am very happy to have these eight young men join the men's soccer program," said Coach Laughlin. "These players will be important contributors to the future success of Brown Men's Soccer. Their drive and intensity will raise our competitive level. I am looking forward to them joining us in preseason."
William Cross (6'1", 175), Nashville, TN - Forward
High School: Martin Luther King Magnet School (Captain) Club: Brentwood SC
Class of 2012 Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 Recruit, Class of 2012 College Soccer News Top 150 Recruit, Member of Region III ODP Team, ODP Inter-regional All-Tournament Selection, Participated in trips to Costa Rica and Mexico. 4x All-District Team, and 2009 All-District MVP. Cross also participated in training camp with Estudiantes De La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
Coach Laughlin on Cross: "Will is a dangerous attacking player who has proven himself a successful scorer. He has scored consistently for his Brentwood club team, the Tennessee State team, and the Region II ODP team. We feel that Will can stretch opponents vertically and create problems."
Tim Whalen (6'3", 180), Amston, CT – Defender
High School: RHAM High School (Captain) Club: Oakwood SC U18 Academy (Captain)
Two-time All-Courant Boys Soccer Team Selection, CIAC All-Conference Selection, and CIAC All-State Selection. Participated in the CT Senior Bowl.
Coach Laughlin on Whalen: "Tim greatly impressed us both as a person and player over the last year. He continues to grow physically and develop as a player. As a natural lefty, we look forward to him helping to balance the team while representing Brown Men's Soccer."
Jameson Lochhead (6'3", 185) Basking Ridge, NJ – Defender/Midfielder
High School: Ridge HS (Captain) Club: Match Fit U-18 USSF Academy (Captain)
Led his Match Fit Chelsea team to the Academy Playoffs (2010), Academy Select Team, and Participated in NY/NJ Market Training Center for National Team Scouts.
High School All-American Game Selection, New Jersey "Senior All Star Game" Selection, 3x All-Conference, All-County, and 2x All-State Selection.
Coach Laughlin on Lochhead: "Jameson was the first commitment in our 2012 class and was a great building block in putting this class together. He has the size, speed, athleticism, and technical ability to be an outstanding Ivy League player. I look forward to having Jameson on College Hill and watching him continue to develop."
Jack Gorab (5'9", 160) Newport Beach, CA - Defender
High School: Corona Del Mar High School Club: Pateadores SC U18 Academy
U16 Club National Champions (Slammers FC), ESPN Rise All State selection, Member of the "Daily Pilot Dream Team", 2x All-League, All-County, All-CIF, All-State Team Selection. Did not participate in High School soccer his senior year due to USSDA participation.
Coach Laughlin on Gorab: "Jack is a winner. He competes both on and off the field at a very high level. His leadership, versatility and athleticism will allow him to make an impact on the team right away. "
Michel Comitis (5'9", 150) Capetown, South Africa - Midfielder
High School: Bishops Diocesan College Club: Ajax Cape Town FC Youth Academy
International experience with Capetown Ajax in France, Netherlands, and Japan. Hiroshima Peace Cup All-Tournament Selection, seven-time Cape Town League and Cup Champions, five-time Western Cape Provincial Team Selection.
Coach Laughlin on Comitis: "Michel is a player that I took an instant liking to when I first saw him play. He has a wide range of passes, competes on both sides of the ball, and is vastly experienced. He brings some special qualities that are different then our other midfield players. Michel fits a position of need for us in this recruiting class."
Tariq Akeel (6'1", 170) Rochester Hills, MI - Midfielder
High School: Detroit Country Day School Club: Vardar SC Freiburg Academy
Two-time All-State Selection, Participated in Detroit Market Training Center for National Team Scouts, State Champion, and USL Super Y League National Team Member.
Coach Laughlin on Akeel: "Tariq will be an outstanding player here at Brown over the next four years. He has a great will to win and should fit in nicely with the team. He can play both in center of midfield or as a forward."
Tyler Smith (6'0", 150) Kingswood, TX - Defender
High School: Kingwood Park HS Club: Texans SC Academy
Helped his U16 Academy team in the playoffs, participated at U18 level the past two years. 2x District 41-4A All-Academic Team, Region III-4A Champions, Tyler did not play High school soccer his senior year due to his USSDA participation.
Coach Laughlin on Tyler: "Tyler is a versatile defender out of the Texans SC Houston Academy program. He follows in the footsteps of some outstanding backs out of Texas who have played at Brown. Tyler is very athletic and has played all four positions in the back. We expect him to compete at both right back and center back this fall."
Eduardo Martin (6'1", 170) Madrid, Spain – Midfielder
High School: British School Tenerife Club: Laguna CD
Martin was a member of the Real Madrid youth academy. He has experience playing with and against the top clubs in Spain. After his time with Real Madrid he joined a local club: Tenerife CD, with his brother: Ignacio Martin. They eventually joined Laguna CD together and competed at the Division of Honor Level. Ignacio currently plays at the University of Delaware.
Coach Laughlin on Martin: "Eduardo is an experienced player who we are thrilled has decided to join us at Brown. He is a very good link player in midfield who possesses excellent technique. He will compliment our other midfield players very well."
