Soccer Falls to Columbia, 2-1, in Ivy League Opener
New York, NY- Columbia's Will Stamatis scored the golden goal at the 101:14 minute mark to lift Lions to a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Brown men's soccer team on Saturday night. The loss dropped the Bears to 5-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league, while the Lions improved to 4-5-1 and 1-0-0 in the Ivy play.
Neither Brown or Columbia scored in the first half, but the Lions fired off five shots to Brown's two. Brown's goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss made one save in the half, as did Lion keeper Alexander Aurrichio.
The Lions lit up the scoreboard just three minutes into the second half when Francois Anderson assisted on a goal by Henning Sauerbier, who headed one past Kernan-Schloss off a rebound.
But the Bears came back with the help of senior forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) at the 57:04 mark. Rosa came up with the ball in front of the goal and knocked in a shot to even the score at 1-1, which eventually sent the game into overtime.
Neither team could score during the first overtime, but the Bears had a good look on goal when Alex Markes took a shot on net but was blocked. It was the only shot of the overtime.
After a header shot by Mike Mazzullo missed the Brown goal wide at the 101:10 mark to start the second overtime, the Lions scored the golden goal just four seconds later when Stamatis flicked in a header from Mazzullo to end the game.
The Bears outshot Columbia 6-4 in the second half, but the Lions ended the game with an 11-9 edge in shots. Both teams tallied two corner kicks tonight, and Kernan Schloss (2-2-0) led the Brown defense with two saves to earn the loss. Aurrichio earned the win in net with three saves for the Lions.
Brown's Rosa now has four goals on the season and one assist for nine points.
