Bears Defeat Boston University 2-0; Earn Fourth Shutout of the Season

Providence, RI- Freshman defender Alex Markes (Valencia, CA) and senior forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) each scored goals to lead the Brown men's soccer team (5-2-0) to a 2-0 victory over visiting Boston University (2-5-0) on Friday night at Stevenson Field.

The Bears earned their first score late in the first half when Austin Mandel (Tarzana, CA) served up a free kick after a foul. Markes got his head on the ball and knocked in his first career goal, the game winner, to give the Bears a 1-0 edge over the Terriers.

Brown remained with the one goal advantage heading into halftime, as the Bears had a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

The Bears continued their solid play into the second stanza and increased the intensity firing off seven shots to BU's five. The Bears had a flurry of shots that missed wide, or were saved by goalkeeper Nick Thomson, who ended the night with four saves.

It wasn't until the 87:58 mark that the Bears would score again, but this time it was Rosa scoring his third goal of the year. Senior Evan Coleman sent a pass to Rosa, who dribbled the ball into the goal box. Rosa pulled goalkeeper Nick Thomson out of the net, faked him out and blasted one in to give the Bears a two-goal lead.

Brown's back line led by Ryan McDuff, Eric Robertson and Alex Markes helped junior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss earn his second career win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
