Columbia, SC- Senior forward TJ Popolizio scored the Brown University men's soccer team's (4-2-0) lone goal this afternoon as the squad fell 5-1 to Kentucky (6-2-1) at Stone Stadium in the final day of the Gamecock Classic. The goal was his third of the weekend, as he has scored six in the last five straight games.
Kentucky seemed to control the game from the start outshooting the Bears 11-4 in the first period and then 10-6 in the second for a 21-10 overall advantage. Kentucky's Josh Mulvany chipped in the first goal 13:32 into the game off a cross from CJ Tappel that went over Alex Carr's head to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.
Kentucky built its lead to two when Josh McCrary blasted in a long cross from Tappel at midfield at the 23:51 mark, but Popolizio was able to bring the Bears within one at 76:13 from three yards out on a pass from senior captain Taylor Gorman.
Then, in the final 11 minutes of play, Kentucky had a flurry of three goals to extend its lead to 5-1 with two goals by Tyler Riggs at the 79:42 and 84:16 mark, and another by Brendan Murphy at 89:51 to end the game.
Alex Carr tallied six saves in net in 90 minutes this afternoon to drop to 3-2-0 on the year, while Kentucky keeper Tyler Beadle posted four saves improving to 5-2-0.
The Bears are back at home on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. against Boston University, and will then host Boston College on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
