TJ Popolizio Leads Bears to 2-0 Victory over South Carolina
Columbia, SC- Senior forward TJ Popolizio (Rexford, NY) led the Brown men's soccer team (4-1-0) to a 2-0 victory over South Carolina (1-4-1) this evening at the Gamecock Classic at Stone Stadium with two goals.
Popolizio, the Bears' leading scorer with five goals, has scored five goals in Brown's last four games. His first marker tonight came 25:23 into the first half when he nailed in a deflection off South Carolina's Alex Long in goal just three yards out. Senior forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) received the assist, his first of the 2011 season.
Just under two minutes into the second half, Popolizio sparked the Bears again and increased Brown's lead to two after Mike Manella (Toluca Lake, CA) headed a Kevin Gavey (Fairfield, CT) corner kick off the cross bar. Popolizio then got to the deflection with a header of his own putting one past Long to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
South Carolina edged Brown 13-12 in shots, but Bruno held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears also posted a 13-5 advantage in fouls in the win tonight, as freshman goalkeeper Alex Carr (Hamilton, New Zealand) improved to 3-1-0 on the year and picked up his second shutout. Carr posted three saves in 90 minutes.
The Bears will now play Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 11:00 a.m.
