Bears Earn Second Straight Brown Soccer Classic Title with 2-0 Victory Over Temple
Providence, RI- The Brown University men's soccer team earned its second straight Dunkin' Donuts Brown Soccer Classic title with a 2-0 victory over Temple University on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Senior forward TJ Popolizio (Rexford, NY) and sophomore forward Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) scored for the Bears today, improving Brown to 3-1-0 on the year, while the Owls were handed their first loss of the year dropping to 2-1-0.
McNamara earned the Brown Soccer Classic's Most Valuable Player award, while junior co-captain Ryan McDuff (Plano, TX) earned the Defensive MVP. Also earning a spot on the all-tournament team was Popolizio and Rob Medairos (Stafford, VA).
In a fairly even first half where the Bears held a 7-6 advantage in shots and just a 2-0 edge in corner kicks, McNamara fired off Brown's first shot on goal 6:24 into the game but Temple's Bobby Rosata picked up his first of two saves. At the 10:51 mark, Brown junior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) made his first career save after stopping a shot by Owl defender Jake Lister.
The teams continued to battle throughout the first 45 minutes, but neither could find the back of the net as both squads headed into the lockerroom at the intermission scoreless.
The Bears came out fired up and just under five minutes into the second period McNamara set up Popolizio for the game-winner. Today's goal was Popolizio's third straight in three games, and his second consecutive game-winner for the Bears as he leads the team in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist.
It wasn't until 72:42 that Bruno would knock in another, but this time it was Salama scoring his first career goal. Junior defender Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL) fed the ball up the Salama who was right in front of the goal. After a bit of a scramble, Salama got his foot on the ball and blasted one past Rosata to give the Bears a 2-0 cushion with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Kernan-Schloss picked up his first win in net tallying two saves for the Bears today.
The Bears are back in action Sept. 16-18 at the Gamecock Classic. The Bears are scheduled to play South Carolina at 7:30 pm on Sept. 16, and then Kentucky at 11:00 am on Sept. 18.
