First Half Surge Lifts Brown to First Home Win of 2011 Season
Providence, RI- The Brown University men's soccer team earned the season's first win at Stevenson Field with a 2-1 victory over George Mason during the Dunkin' Donuts Brown Soccer Classic on Friday evening. Senior Sean Rosa (Montreal Quebec) scored a goal for the Bears tonight, while senior TJ Popolizio scored a goal and tallied an assist to boost Brown to 2-1-0 on the young season. George Mason dropped to 2-2-0.
A very spirited match with 28 fouls called, including six yellow cards, the Bears were relentless in defending their home field. The stingy Brown defense limited the Patriots to just eight shots, and only two looks on goal in the 90 minutes of play this evening, while the Bears posted 14 shots and five on goal.
Bruno's first score of the night came at the 31:08 mark after a few previous attempts that came up short. Popolizio sent the ball over to Rosa over on the left side of the goal who blasted one in the lower left corner of the net past George Mason's Dustin Butcher to take a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later on a Brown corner kick, junior midfielder Thomas McNamara blasted a corner kick to junior defender Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL), who then chipped it to Popolizio to head in to gain a 2-0 advantage before halftime.
It wasn't until the 84th minute that the Patriots would score their first goal of the game. Senior midfielder Ryan Gracia directed a corner kick to junior forward Taylor Morgan who headed one past Brown rookie goalkeeper Alex Carr (Hamilton, New Zealand).
Popolizio leads the team in scoring with five points on two goals and one assists, while Rosa follows with four points on two goals.
George Mason will now match up against Holy Cross at noon on Sunday, September 11, while the Bears will follow up with a match against Temple at 2:30.
