Kingston, RI- The No. 11 Brown University men's soccer team (1-1) came back strong in the consolation game of the Ocean State Classic with a dominating 3-0 victory over Bryant University (0-2) on Monday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex. Three different Bears scored in today's victory as Brown earned its first win of the 2011 season.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead and tallied their first goal 12:34 into the game when senior captain Taylor Gorman (Freeport, ME) sent the ball through to senior forward Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec) who knocked in his first goal of the year.
Brown continued to fire off shots out-shooting Bryant 10-4 in the first half, but goalkeeper George Spanos kept the Bears from scoring the rest of the half.
The Bears came out firing after the break, scoring two more goals to put the game out of reach. In the 55th minute of play, senior forward TJ Popolizio (Rexford, NY) connected on a pass through the box from junior defender Dylan Remick (Inverness, IL). And later in the half, midfielder Thomas McNamra (West Nyack, NY) accepted a pass from sophomore Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) and maneuvered through the defense and beat Spanos and put one in the net just 20 minutes later.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Carr earned his first win of the year and picked up two saves in 90 minutes of play to improve to 1-1 on the season. Bryant's Spanos tallied three saves to drop to 0-2 on the year.
The Bears outshot Bryant 14-7 for the game and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks this afternoon.
The Bears will now host the Dunkin Donuts Brown Soccer Classic presented by Academy Bus Sept. 9-11. George Mason, Holy Cross and Temple will be challenging for the Brown Soccer Classic title this weekend, as the Bears match up with George Mason on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Temple on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
