Providence, RI- Juniors T.J. Popolizio (Rexford, NY) and Sean Rosa (Montreal, Quebec), as well as senior Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) each scored to help the No. 22 ranked Brown University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon in Burlington. With the win, the Bears improved to 5-0-2 on the year, while Vermont dropped to 4-2-3.
The Bears controlled the game from the start, out-shooting the Catamounts 9-5 in the first period and then 5-4 in the second to lead 14-9 for the game. Popolizio struck first for the Bears as he sent one past Vermont goalkeeper Xan Rousselle at the 39:07 mark on passes from Taylor Gorman (Freeport, ME) and Rosa to put the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
Brown's defense kept the Catamounts away from the goal, as Vermont didn't register its first shot on net until the second period. Senior goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) led the effort with three saves in 90 minutes of play.
Bruno rallied in the final 10 minutes of the game, as Rosa put one in on an assist from Evan Coleman (Amherst, MA) at the 79:18 mark, and then Okafor followed up on a pass from Rosa to give the team a 3-0 cushion.
Vermont goalkeeper finished the night with seven saves in 85:18, and was replaced by David Ramada in the final five minutes.
The Bears start Ivy League competition on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 p.m. when it takes on the Columbia Lions.
